Get to Know: Doug Meyer
Doug Meyer’s multidisciplinary work has graced the covers of over 37 magazines worldwide, including AD China (March 2019), AD Germany (May 2012), New York Magazine (May 2011), and Metropolitan Home (May 2005). Early in his storied career, he was named to the Architectural Digest 100 designers by AD France and AD Germany (2010–2016), and his practice is presently focused exclusively on fine art and home-products design.
A Kentucky-born graduate of Parsons School of Design (BFA, Fine Art), Meyer’s output is informed by his extensive knowledge of art, design, history, architecture, and fashion, all woven together to create unexpected riffs on classic motifs as well as mystifying objects. Most recognizable today are his commissioned cameo portraits executed in wildly colorful resinous bas-relief concatenations bedecked with semi-precious stones, plexiglass scraps, and glass fragments that somehow manage to truly capture the subject’s demeanor. No polymath’s curriculum vitae is complete without a book publication, which, in Meyer’s case, is Heroes: A Tribute (released 2018), documenting the sculptures of his year-long touring show Heroes. Meyer’s design aesthetic is readily found in fabric, rugs, wallpaper, lighting, furniture, home accessories, and soon forthcoming, tile. Now, in collaboration with Modern Matter, Meyer’s sensibility is applied to hand-crafted hardware.
