Hardware Finishes: Part 1
The beauty of a living finish lies in its ever-evolving character, shaped by time and the environment. Whether you allow it to age into a deep, old-world patina or maintain its bright, polished luster, the right finish adds unparalleled depth and character to a room. From classic fixtures to sleek, contemporary designs, this timeless metal effortlessly enhances any interior. But what exactly is a living finish—and why are we so captivated by it?
A living finish is exactly what it sounds like—a finish that evolves over time. Unlike lacquered or coated metals, living finishes are left untreated, allowing them to develop a rich patina as they age and interact with their environment.
Much like a well-loved leather or jeans garment, unlaquered brass acquires a unique character over time, telling a story of use and history. As the metal matures, it deepens in tone, subtly shifting in response to environmental factors such as humidity and frequent touch.
This natural transformation doesn’t diminish the beauty of the hardware—it enhances it. The patina preserves the integrity of the material while adding depth and dimension, making each piece more captivating as it weathers and ages.

At Modern Matter, we believe in materials that tell a story. A living finish is more than just a design choice—it’s an investment in craftsmanship, authenticity, and the beauty of time. Whether you embrace the transformation or maintain its original glow, a living finish ensures that no two pieces are ever exactly alike—just like your home.

Unlacquered Brass
Timeless and nostalgic, Unlacquered Brass starts as a polished, highly reflective surface and gradually develops a rich patina over time. This natural aging process creates warm, textured variations, making each piece uniquely beautiful. If you prefer to maintain its original shine, a quick polish will easily restore its brilliance.
Burnished Brass
With a warm, velvety gleam, Burnished Brass is achieved through a process where the brass is hand-rubbed with a light patina before undergoing a barreling process that enhances its character with delicate dimples, subtle spotting, and fine scratches. To preserve its subtle brush lines and handcrafted patina, avoid polishing and instead maintain it with gentle dusting.

For finishes like our Unlacquered Brass, you have two options:
- Let it patina naturally: Simply allow the finish to age over time, developing a rich, lived-in character. Regularly wipe with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and maintain its evolving beauty.
- Restore its polished look: If you prefer a bright, refined finish, use a brass wadding polish following the manufacturer's instructions. This will effortlessly bring back its original shine while preserving the integrity of the metal.
For finishes like our Burnished Brass, where the brass is hand-rubbed to achieve a subtle aged patina:
- Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth to keep it looking its best.
- Avoid abrasive materials, harsh cleaners, or excess moisture, as these can disrupt the carefully developed patina and alter the intended finish.
By following these simple care tips, your living finishes will continue to develop character and elegance, enhancing your space for years to come.
