Whitney Durham of Whitney Durham Interiors has designed spaces across the southeast—ranging from complex home renovations to more intimate small projects. Her love of original art and color, combined with unique antique and vintage finds, is the foundation for her memorable projects.
A: For as long as I can remember, I have always loved antique shopping. I was constantly rearranging my room as a child and helping my mom select fabrics and other design elements for my parents home growing up. I was constantly scouring interior decor magazines and books for tips, tricks, and inspiration. As a young adult, family and friends always encouraged me to start my own interior decorating business after they were at my home for a gathering or party. So I started helping friends and family with their homes, and with much success from that, I opened my own business in 2013! I have been very fortunate to remain consistently busy with organic referrals through word of mouth, various publications, and social media presence.

A: I would describe my design style as fresh, colorful, and curated! I love to mix new and old pieces or family heirlooms into a project so that the space feels meaningful to my client but current at the same time. I also like to mix high and low-priced pieces into the same area so it feels warm and approachable for people of all ages.

A: Creating a color palette per project can stem from anything as small as a favorite accessory a client purchased on their travels or from something as large as the paint color on the walls, wallpaper, or a Turkish rug. I like to pull in some unexpected color combinations, such as a touch of pink in the kitchen or coral in the master bedroom. Whatever the color palette is stemmed from in a particular room, I always incorporate that same color in some way in the adjacent rooms to create an overall flow.

A: When I design a room, my ultimate goal is to make sure it accurately reflects those that will live in the space. It needs to make them happy when they are in it. That means it needs to be filled with colors they love, furniture that is comfortable to them, and a few family heirlooms or treasures from trips, etc. I want my clients to love where they live and spend so much of their time.

A: Hardware on cabinetry and furniture is like jewelry to an outfit. It adds personality and character—whether simple and clean or flashy and larger, hardware is the icing on the cake!

A: In my free time, I'm scouring Instagram for plenty of design inspiration, along with magazines, home decor books, and vintage websites like Chairish and The Local Vault. Regarding Instagram, I mostly follow creative spirits like other interior designers, decorators, bloggers, artists, magazines, retail shops, etc. So when I scroll, it's similar to an online magazine filled with an abundance of beautifully designed spaces and products that inspire other like-minded people and me.
