A collaboration between homeowner and design team
When Allison Abbott purchased a new home for her family, she turned to long-time friends Nancy Targgart and Kim Moore of Cashion Hill Design to help her pull her unique vision together. The result is a beautiful eclectic melding of old and new.
Q: Tell us about the journey to create your beautiful home!
A: I think I got the bug for wanting my home to feel beautiful and nostalgic from growing up in the South. I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama which is steeped with big, old, wonderfully designed homes. My family has always loved beautiful things regardless of their style. Shopping for vintage and old goodies has always been a passion. I’ve collected so much over the years that I got a bit overwhelmed. Let’s just say there are a lot of side of the road furniture pieces and granny finds in my home (ha). So, I turned to my good friends Nancy and Kim of Cashion Hill Design to help me edit and pull my vision together. For this particular house, I wanted every room to have a theme. Haha -no one likes a theme, but I DO!
Q: How would you describe your style and your process for creating your spaces?
A: I don’t know how to put one word on my style. Nancy, Kim and I do a lot of collaborating, drinking wine and laughing to get to a final result. They are so awesome to work with and understand my brain going in 80 million directions. Their talent is curating all the good and even mediocre pieces in my house to give it the layers it needs to look finished. They also have a killer eye for fabrics and paint colors.
Q: What (if any) challenges did you encounter when decorating your home?
A: Having so many pieces that I love. It was hard to find space for it all in this down-sized home. Also, being patient for things to be complete, finished. Everyone is on the fast track to have things done immediately— instant gratification. Didn’t we all learn with Covid that just being patient and still will produce the same result? AND, when you have a team like Cashion Hill you are going to end up with a beautiful result. A home that is completely unique to you.
Q: Which room has been your favorite to design and why?
A: All of them. I go into every single room and think it all has interesting pieces I have collected from all over the country, whether inherited, out west or down south. They are all reminders from something special I have done with my mom, sisters and children.
Q: How do you keep your creative spirit fulfilled?
A: A bit of ADHD and a lot of energy….I grew up In a family of creators. My mom sews, paints, knits and makes her own clothes and inherited this from my grandmother and her grandmother before that. I also surround myself with a wonderful group of creative friends and family.
