About Our Backplates

Backplates add another layer of detail to cabinet hardware. They frame knobs and pulls, protect cabinetry from wear, and help hardware feel more finished. Modern Matter’s collection of luxury backplates is designed to add depth without overpowering the space.

Each backplate is handcrafted from solid brass instead of lightweight zinc alloy. The pieces have real weight and develop character over time. Finishes like unlacquered brass, satin nickel, and oil-rubbed bronze create natural depth across the collection. Many styles feature clean lines, sculptural edges, and decorative shapes. These pieces work across both traditional and modern interiors. Several designs also result from designer collaborations with Young Huh, Mark D. Sikes, Michelle Nussbaumer, and others.

Backplates can help smaller knobs feel more substantial or give simple cabinetry a more layered look. Many designers pair them with coordinating knobs and pulls for a consistent hardware palette.

FAQ

What is a cabinet backplate?

A cabinet backplate is a decorative piece installed behind a knob or pull. It helps frame the hardware, adds detail to the cabinetry, and can create a more layered look throughout a kitchen or bath.

Are cabinet backplates necessary?

Cabinet backplates are not required, but they can change the overall look of the hardware. Many designers use them to add contrast, make smaller knobs feel more substantial, or give simple cabinetry a more finished appearance.

Can you add backplates to existing hardware?

Yes. Many backplates can be added to existing knobs and pulls as long as the sizing works with the current hardware. They are often used during kitchen updates to refresh cabinetry without replacing every piece of hardware.

Do backplates protect cabinets?

Yes. Backplates can help protect cabinetry from scratches, fingerprints, and everyday wear around knobs and pulls. They also help reduce visible marks on painted or softer cabinet finishes over time.

Can you mix backplates with different hardware styles?

Yes. Backplates work with both traditional and modern hardware styles. Many designers mix simple backplates with more decorative knobs or pair detailed backplates with streamlined pulls for added contrast.
