For Meredith Beregovski, founder and lead designer of Georgia Street Design, her motto is pretty simple: live a well-designed life. And she does just that. Known for her clean, timeless aesthetic, she takes inspiration from her travels but is a Southerner at heart, and infuses her design point of view with her client’s personal style.
A: I am not classically trained. In college, I planned to work alongside my mom in the real estate industry. After college, I worked with her for a short time and then decided to buy a historic building, turn it into an event space and start a career in wedding planning. In the meantime, my mom had a client move from California who was in search of an interior designer. Although I was not trained, my mom recommended me to her, and she hired me to design her home. As a child, I spent my free time rearranging my bedroom furniture, but I don't think I discovered my talent until finishing my first project.

A: My personal style is eclectic, happy, and bright—with lots of color. I love art and filling my home with things that bring me joy. In terms of my work, I pride myself on genuinely getting to know my client and designing spaces that make them feel at home. I always say it's a sixth sense I have—to meet a client and know exactly how they would want their home to feel. Once I understand my client's style, I start the creative process. We begin sourcing the furniture pieces and then build into the design by selecting fabric, art, and rugs that complement the furniture design. I love to start with things like a piece of art or hardware, in the case of a kitchen or bath design, and let it lead the design process.

A: Being from the south has taught me a thing or two about hospitality. I like to ensure the spaces I create welcome people into them—not too stuffy or too formal. We also have the luxury of experiencing all seasons, so outdoor spaces have hit the top of my list to design. I also find myself bringing the outdoors in with floral patterns and the importance of fresh flowers appearing in some of the most unexpected spaces, such as a laundry room. Who doesn't need a pop of color to stare at while folding laundry?

A: Cabinet hardware can make or break a design—from the size, shape, and finish, and if done well, it can make the design. I think cabinet hardware should be thought of as the accessory that completes the design. I take a lot of time selecting the perfect hardware when working on a kitchen, built-in, or bathroom; it is never an afterthought. And it goes without saying that Modern Matter is my favorite line of hardware ;)

A: I don't like rules, but I think it's best to follow your instinct with design, as you would anything else. If it seems too small, it probably is... if it looks too pink (if there could possibly be such a thing!), it probably is...
If you follow your instinct with design, professional or not, you will most likely end up with a space you really like. I can tell immediately if I present something to a client they aren't in love with. My motto is that there are always more options—I don't push things on my clients because I know that if they don't love something initially, they probably aren't going to fall in love with it later.

A: Having a creative brain, I think it's always in overdrive to find inspiration in my day-to-day life. Magazines (especially the ones from Europe!), travel, and fabrics are very inspiring to me. Pinterest has never been my thing—I prefer to keep an updated travel calendar and a stocked workroom to pull inspiration from. The women I work with are also very creative, and we all love fashion. When we are together in the office, the creative spirits collide—and that's a lot of fun to be a part of!
