Get to Know: Trellis Home Design
Allison Mattison runs Trellis Home Design out of the Hingham, MA Studio/Showroom, which offers Design Services as well as a curated retail "Design Shop." Born from a love for a beautiful, colorful, and happy home, Trellis Home's mission is to bring classic decor with a colorful flair into their clients' homes, creating vibrant and livable spaces that will stand the test of time.
Q: How did you start your design career?
A: I have a background in fashion merchanding and fashion design, but always had an interest in interior design. I dabbled in some interior design courses when I lived in California, and after years of working with textiles and patterns in the fashion industry, it was a natural progression to the home industry. I started Trellis Home as a "shop the look" custom curated home website with a business partner in 2013, which segued into residential and commercial design soon afterward, which quickly became the main focus of the business!
Q: What is your favorite room to design?
A: That is hard to answer—I love creating a personality for all rooms I design! I like to make powder rooms more punchy and whimsical, which is always fun to do, but I also love the challenge of creating a family room that is the main "hangout" of a household and making it super fun and unique while also being practical for daily life and comfortable enough for it to be everyone's favorite room in the house...
Q: How does your background play into your aesthetic?
A: My fashion design background absolutely plays into my aesthetic. I have always been driven to color and pattern and worked for companies ranging from Michael Kors runway to Lilly Pulitzer Palm Beach aesthetic! I loved doing both, and I also love mixing highs and lows and old with new in both fashion as well as Interiors to create a sense of soul. Using unique textiles and incorporating small, unexpected details make a room feel custom, as it does when designing apparel–having a trained eye for these types of details and knowing how to mix them together in interesting ways definitely helped me when I transitioned from fashion to home!
Q: How do you think of hardware when designing a space?
A: Like jewelry! I've always had an obsession with beautiful hardware. Hardware is like the finishing touch in a room that can really set it apart. Regular built-ins can become the stunning focal point of a room with great paint color and stunning hardware!
Q: Any tips or tricks you can share with us?
A: I think just following your gut and initial feelings about a design—your first instincts are usually always right!
