A: This is my primary home, located near Joshua Tree National Park in California. We’ve been slowly updating it over the years, room by room, between my client projects. We tackled these two rooms, our primary bathroom and the sunroom, at the same time because they both had a significant amount of tile work.
A: In terms of style, both spaces embody a blend of modern sophistication infused with a playful touch of whimsy.
For the bathroom, I opted for a captivating design featuring 2x2 green glass tiles on an entire wall, complemented by 4x4 glass tiles in both matte and gloss finishes, creating a subtle yet striking checkered pattern paired with a mustard paint-splattered wallpaper. To anchor the aesthetic, I selected a custom walnut vanity paired with a neutral quartzite countertop, accentuated by brass elements that lend a timeless look to the space.
When dreaming up the sunroom, my vision was to design a space that is bright and pleasant during the day while effortlessly transitioning to an atmospheric haven in the evening. I curated a palette of rose pink, mustard yellow, and textured neutrals. The evening ambiance is enhanced by ceramic light fixtures with dimmers, allowing for the creation of tailored lighting scenarios that evoke a moody vibe for cocktails.
A: I really enjoy blending different materials and figuring out how they can work together seamlessly. In this project, I've incorporated various materials such as ceramic and glass tiles, natural stone, brass, wallpaper, microcement, and warm wood tones.
A: I carefully chose hardware finishes and stones that harmonized with the room's existing materials, enhancing the overall aesthetic and elevating the space.
A: I usually start by selecting my favorite colors and exploring how they complement each other. I'm particularly drawn to muted palettes for their cohesive appeal, which I enhance by incorporating neutral elements like fabrics, paint, wood, ceramics, and stone. It's crucial to test samples of each element to ensure they harmonize well and test them in the space throughout the day so you can see them in every light. I enjoy experimenting with various colors until I discover the perfect palette for the space. As for metals, it ultimately comes down to personal preference and the desired aesthetic of the room–I tend to lean towards satin, lacquered, or burnished finishes.
